The Calabrese Citron is a biblical fruit cultivated for millennia along the Tyrrhenian coast of Cosenza, from Diamante to Tortora. It's one of the oldest fruits in the Mediterranean.
Every autumn, rabbis from Israel visit Calabrese citron groves to select the most perfect fruits for the Sukkot ritual (Feast of Tabernacles). Only the Calabrese citron is considered kosher for this ceremony.
In cooking, the peel is used for candied fruit, liqueurs, marmalades, and the celebrated traditional candied citron. Fresh juice is used in granitas and cocktails.
