Confetti di Sulmona are celebrated worldwide: almonds coated in sugar, produced in the Abruzzo city of Sulmona (birthplace of the poet Ovid) since the 15th century. The confectionery tradition of Sulmona is so deeply rooted that the city is nicknamed the "City of Confetti."
Production takes place in "bassine," large rotating copper vessels where almonds are coated with successive layers of sugar over many hours. The almond must be the Sicilian "Pizzuta d'Avola," the finest variety.
Sulmona confetti have also become works of art: the "fiori di confetti," bouquets handcrafted with colored confetti tied with silk ribbons, are an artisanal excellence known throughout the world.
