The Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda DOP, also known as "melanzana a pomodoro," is a unique vegetable found nowhere else in the world: it resembles a large tomato in shape and color, yet it is an eggplant with a delicate flavor and fruity notes. It is exceptionally rich in antioxidants, containing more than any other eggplant variety.
Cultivated exclusively in the territory of Rotonda, at the foot of Pollino, its origin is shrouded in mystery: it was likely brought from Africa in the 19th century. Harvesting takes place between July and October.
In the kitchen it is incredibly versatile: preserved in oil, grilled, in conserve, or as an ingredient in creative dishes. It is one of Italy's rarest DOP products.
