Festa della ciliegia (Cherry Festival)

The Festa della ciliegia brings the village of San Pietro Apostolo to life, nestled on the scenic slopes of Sila Piccola. Established in the 1980s by the local Pro Loco association, the festival celebrates the prized fruit that symbolizes the village's agricultural heritage. From early morning, the historic center fills with artisan markets, stands showcasing regional food and wine, and cherry-themed art. The cultural highlight unfolds inside the historic Palazzo Mazza—famous for once hosting Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi—which opens its doors for painting exhibitions and period costume displays. Alongside these exhibits, the art contest 'La ciliegia: frutto d’arte' invites local creatives to craft works dedicated to the cherry. On the culinary front, local cherries take center stage both fresh and in handmade treats such as gelato, granita, pastries, and a massive traditional tart layered with homemade jam to share with visitors. Delicious sandwiches stuffed with local cured meats and classic Calabrian specialties round out the feast.
