The Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria IGP is a sweet and delicate onion cultivated along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, from Nicotera to Amantea. With its distinctive deep red-violet color and rounded or elongated shape, it is appreciated worldwide for its natural sweetness, making it perfect for eating raw as well.
Cultivation takes place in sandy soils near the sea, where a mild and breezy climate favors the growth of onions with a uniquely delicious flavor. The harvest season runs from April through July.
The Cipolla Rossa di Tropea is the star ingredient in countless Calabrese recipes: in salads, preserved in oil, in 'nduja, in fish dishes, and in jams. The Red Onion Festival is held every year in Ricadi.
