Castagna di Montella IGP is a sweet and floury fruit harvested from the chestnut forests of Alta Irpinia, between 500 and 1,000 meters in altitude. The main variety is the "Palummina", appreciated for its easy peeling and delicate flavor.
The harvest takes place between October and November, followed by traditional drying in "gratali" (slow-fire dryers) or transformation into flour, jams, and sweets. Castagne di Montella are the stars of autumn festivals and markets throughout Irpinia.
Chestnut cultivation in this area has ancient origins and represents a fundamental element of the local economy and landscape.
