Forni Avoltri (UD) – Festa di San Lorenzo

The Festa di San Lorenzo in Forni Avoltri is an unmissable event for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the authentic traditions of Friuli Venezia Giulia. For two days, August 9–10, the entire village mobilizes to celebrate its patron saint with the perfect blend of spirituality, gastronomy, and conviviality that characterizes the most genuine mountain festivals in northeastern Italy. Under large marquees set up in the town center, visitors can savor the most representative dishes of Carnic cuisine: casunziei filled with potatoes and cheese, mezzùl (Carnic ravioli), grilled meats, and the unmissable local DOP cheeses. Special attention deserves the sweet offerings, with homemade specialties made from forest berries that reflect the richness of the surrounding mountain landscape. Each dish is the expression of knowledge handed down from generation to generation. The festival program includes religious celebrations in the parish church on August 9 at 10:30, followed by the opening of food stalls from 12:00 noon. Sunday, August 10, culminates in the enchanting torchlight procession: starting at 20:30, hundreds of torches illuminate the village streets, creating a magical atmosphere as the procession winds through the historic center accompanied by traditional songs and local folk music. Among traditional Friulian dances and convivial gatherings, the Festa di San Lorenzo is the ideal occasion to discover how Alpine communities keep their cultural roots alive.
