GIOCHI DI SANTA MARGHERITA

This event, celebrated every July 20th in honor of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, patron saint of fishermen and protector of the village, animates the medieval streets of Vernazzo with traditional competitions, skill challenges, and popular games that involve residents, families, and visitors in an atmosphere of collective participation.

Historically tied to the maritime devotion of the Vernazzo community, the event has deep roots in Ligurian culture, where Santa Margherita is venerated as a symbol of protection and prosperity. In the heart of Vernazzo, one of the most enchanting villages on the Ligurian coast, the games unfold among characteristic caruggi (narrow alleyways), cobbled piazzas, and the harbor, creating a perfect blend of entertainment, cultural heritage, and tradition.

Competitions include the Regata dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Regatta with naval races and speed trials at sea), the Palio delle Cantinelle (traditional strength and skill challenges), rope games, culinary competitions featuring typical Ligurian dishes such as pesto trofie and anchoveta, and folk performances with local musical groups. Activities begin in the morning (10:00 AM) with the official opening and procession of the saint's statue, continue with sporting competitions in the afternoon (2:00 PM–6:00 PM), and culminate in the evening with a community dinner and dancing celebration (9:00 PM).
