VENERDI SANTO

The Calata di Cristo dalla Croce is one of the most evocative and authentic religious representations in Liguria, renewed every Good Friday in Triora, an ancient village in the Argentina valley. This sacred pageant has its roots in the Middle Ages and maintains its remarkable ability to touch the hearts of the faithful and visitors alike, drawing people each year from throughout the valley and many Triora natives who return to their hometown to participate in this solemn moment filled with spiritual significance.

The deposition rite takes place in Triora's Collegiata and represents the culmination of the celebration: after the moving chanting of the Stabat Mater, two actors together with the priest perform the symbolic gesture of removing the nails from the hands and feet of Christ. The body is then wrapped in a shroud and placed in an ancient portable shrine, to be carried solemnly through the streets of the village illuminated by lights and torches, while the Taggia musical band accompanies the procession with its funeral notes.

The event represents a fundamental moment in strengthening the religious and popular traditions of the Triora community. Throughout Good Friday, special two-headed rolls are distributed, a testament to the rich local gastronomic tradition that accompanies this celebration, making the experience even more authentic and participatory.
