Sagra della patata (Potato Festival)

The Sagra della Patata in Oreno, a hamlet of Vimercate, is a historic festival founded in 1968 and organized by the Circolo Culturale Orenese to celebrate the village's agricultural heritage and its most iconic product: the white potato of Oreno, locally known as 'Biancona'. Throughout the celebration, the courtyards, squares, and alleys of the historic center serve as the backdrop for highlighting this delicious tuber through food stalls serving traditional recipes such as Oreno gnocchi and a variety of other potato-based dishes. The event blends culinary tradition with a vibrant lineup of folk and cultural entertainment. Key highlights include the historical parade featuring flag-wavers, musicians, and ladies in period costumes, the captivating Living Draughts ('Dama Vivente') game, and the traditional contest honoring the heaviest potato. The charming village atmosphere, enhanced by the splendid architecture of Villa Gallarati Scotti and the Borromeo Hunting Lodge, is completed by artisan and local product markets, live music, performances, and street artists.
