Moscioli di Portonovo

Moscioli di Portonovo are wild mussels that live naturally in the waters of Portonovo Bay, in the territory of Ancona. These bivalve mollusks grow freely on rocky outcrops and in rock crevices, feeding on plankton present in the Adriatic waters, which gives them distinctive organoleptic characteristics. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand by local fishermen, following traditional methods that respect the balance of the marine ecosystem and guarantee product quality.

Portonovo mussels stand out for their medium-sized shells, brownish in color with a slightly irregular shape. The flesh, with a firm and juicy consistency, presents an intense and saline flavor with delicate notes that reflect the marine environment of origin. Unlike farmed mussels, these moscioli develop superior flavor complexity thanks to the natural conditions in which they grow.

In the kitchen, Moscioli di Portonovo lend themselves to simple preparations that enhance their natural flavor: they are excellent steamed, in pasta, in fish soup, or simply dressed with extra virgin olive oil and lemon. Recognition as a Slow Food Presidium attests to the importance of preserving this fishing tradition and the sustainable harvesting methods that characterize this Marche production.
