The Tartufo Nero del Molise (Tuber melanosporum and Tuber aestivum) is an excellence product from the forests of Molise, particularly abundant in the areas of San Pietro Avellana and Alto Molise. The Molise territory, rich in pristine woodlands, offers ideal conditions for truffle growth.
San Pietro Avellana is nicknamed the "truffle city" and hosts the Mostra Mercato del Tartufo every year. The main varieties are the Tartufo Nero Pregiato (winter) and the Scorzone (summer).
It is used in the kitchen to enhance fresh pasta, eggs, crostini and meats. Molise is the Italian region with the highest percentage of truffle-producing surface area relative to its territory.
