La Festa dei Candelieri di Sassari (The Festival of the Candles of Sassari)

The Festa dei Candelieri of Sassari is one of Sardinia's most evocative and enchanting events, a celebration that weaves together spirituality, tradition, and culture in an explosion of colour, sound, and devotion. Held in August in honour of the Madonna dell'Assunta, this festival has roots stretching back centuries and represents a defining moment for the Sassari community, where thirteen gremi—ancient craft guilds—pass down through generations the privilege of shouldering the magnificent votive candles in a dancing procession accompanied by traditional fifes and drums. The main event takes place on 14 August, but celebrations extend throughout nearly the entire month, with the Descent of the Small Candles on 5 August, the Medium Candles on 10 August, and concluding with the Octave of the Candles on 22 August. The procession departs solemnly from Piazza Castello and reaches the church of Santa Maria di Betlem, transforming Sassari's streets into a stage of tradition and faith. Since 2013, the Descent of the Candles has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is part of the Italian Network of Great Shoulder-Borne Structures. Beyond its profound religious significance, the festival offers a complete sensory experience: live concerts, cultural events, and from 11 August onwards, characteristic outdoor feasts featuring typical Sassari dishes such as zimino and collective grilled meats in the piazza.
