Festeggiamenti in onore di Sant'Anna a Castelbuono (Celebrations in Honor of Saint Anna)

In Castelbuono, in the province of Palermo, the feast of Saint Anna is far more than a simple religious celebration: it is a fascinating journey through the centuries that weaves together spirituality, history, and folk tradition. From July 17-27, 2026, the entire medieval village comes alive to honor its patroness, guardian of an extraordinary relic: the skull of the saint, preserved in the Palatine Chapel of Castello dei Ventimiglia since 1454 and officially recognized in 1615. The festival opens with the evocative Novena, during which the statue of Saint Anna processes through the historic center accompanied by children carrying the traditional illuminated ‹coppo›, creating magical and deeply moving moments. Each day of the Festeggiamenti tells a different story. On July 25th, the Procession of the Keys recreates the past with actors in period costumes who ceremonially hand over the Chapel keys to the mayor, while on July 26th the centennial edition of the ‹Cursa i Sant'Anna› takes place, one of Europe's oldest foot races, born back in 1912. On July 27th, the feast day proper, the solemn procession of the Sacred Relic, accompanied by confraternities and civic authorities, culminates in spectacular fireworks lighting up the Sicilian sky. Framing these solemn moments are performances by the town band, concerts in the piazza, and genuine popular participation.
