Giochi de Le Porte (Games of the Gates)

The Giochi de Le Porte is one of central Italy's most captivating historical reenactments, turning Gualdo Tadino into a lively medieval theater every final weekend of September. Celebrating its 46th edition in 2026, the event honors Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's patron saint, keeping alive 15th-century traditions with the participation of around a thousand costumed figures. The festival spans three days of medieval magic: on Friday, the historic taverns of the four Gates (San Benedetto, San Donato, San Facondino, and San Martino) open their doors; on Saturday, a magnificent historical parade winds through the streets of the old town center, evoking the atmosphere of the past; on Sunday, the four districts compete in thrilling contests to win the prestigious Palio. The competitions include donkey cart racing, slingshot shooting, archery, and bareback donkey racing, culminating in the dramatic ritual where the winning Gate burns the effigy of Bastola, the legendary witch blamed for destroying the ancient city. Beyond the games, Giochi de Le Porte offers an immersive culinary journey through the district taverns, where visitors can savor medieval flavors in an authentic and spirited ambiance, creating a complete celebration of Umbrian history, tradition, and local culture.
