Now in its twentieth edition, this festival celebrates the strazzata, the legendary pepper-studded focaccia that represents the culinary soul of the region. Filled with the finest local cured meats and cheeses, enriched with omelette and cruschi peppers, the strazzata transforms each year into a symbol of gastronomic tradition that stands the test of time. Set against the splendid backdrop of Lagopesole castle, the village comes alive for three days of celebration where Lucanian cuisine reigns supreme. The gastronomic stands feature other regional delicacies such as provolone impiccato, salt cod with cruschi peppers and traditional desserts, accompanied by local wines that enhance every flavour. This year, the event is enriched with a new dimension through the ‹Festival dei grani antichi› (Ancient Grains Festival), a unique opportunity to discover the varieties of traditional cereals that have nourished this land for centuries: from Senatore Cappelli wheat to diploid spelt, along with rediscovered native varieties cultivated by passionate local farmers. In the dedicated ancient grains area, agronomist experts will illustrate the nutritional and historical characteristics of these cereals, while you can taste pani, pasta and baked products made with these extraordinary ingredients. But the Sagra della strazzata is more than just food: the festival offers a rich cultural programme featuring street artists, captivating performances, exhibitions, falconry displays and artisan markets. The event, titled ‹Il mondo di Federico II - Il gusto della corte› (The World of Frederick II - The Taste of the Court), transports visitors into a medieval atmosphere where history, gastronomy and sustainable agriculture intertwine perfectly. Street bands and live performances recreate the imperial court atmosphere, transforming the village into a place where the past evokes its splendour through the flavours and traditions that still characterise this fascinating land today.
