Sardinian Saffron DOP is far more than a simple spice: it is a cultural heritage rooted in a millennia-old tradition documented since the Middle Ages, when saffron cultivation spread throughout the Mediterranean through Arab trade. This precious 'red gold' has accompanied the history of the Sardinian people through the centuries, finding use not only in the kitchen but also in colouring the famous traditional island clothing and fine textiles. Recognized as a Slow Food presidium since the early 2000s, it represents today a symbol of economic and cultural renewal for the entire region. The Strade dello Zafferano represents one of the most fascinating appointments on Sardinia's autumn calendar. For over 30 years, the Regional Saffron Exhibition transforms the towns of Turri, Villanovafranca and San Gavino Monreale into an explosion of violet colours and intense fragrances. During the ten days in November (1-16 November 2026), visitors can experience a complete and immersive sensory journey: admire from a hot air balloon the fields tinged with violet in a fascinating landscape, stroll among exhibition stands dedicated to different varieties of saffron, participate in educational workshops on the cultivation and processing of the spice, watch cooking demonstrations by local chefs, and taste gastronomic specialities made with this extraordinary ingredient. What makes this festival even more remarkable is the fact that Sardinia produces 66% of Italy's national saffron output, consolidating Italian primacy in this sector and representing one of the most recognized gastronomic excellences in Europe. The virtuous collaboration between the three municipalities of Medio Campidano transforms a simple event into a true journey through tradition, culture and island gastronomic excellence, where every visitor can witness firsthand the value of a supply chain that represents the human and professional renewal of entire communities, discovering the meticulous work of the growers who preserve this tradition.
