Medievalis

Medievalis returns to bring Pontremoli to life, celebrating the historic granting of the Free Commune charter to the local community in 1226 by Emperor Frederick II. At the time, the sovereign called the town 'clavis et ianua' (key and gateway) for communications between Lombardy and Tuscany, underscoring its strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Throughout the festival, the historic center transforms into an authentic period setting, closed to cars to welcome travelers, merchants, carriages, and knights. Numerous reenactors in costume fill the city streets, reviving the various social classes of the era, including nobility, clergy, the military class, courtiers, and peasants. The coordination of events and historical settings is managed by the Compagnia del Piagnaro, which has overseen the reenactment for years, creating an engaging gathering place for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
