Sagra dei Funghi (Mushroom Festival)

The Sagra dei Funghi of Cusano Mutri represents one of the most anticipated gastronomic events in the Sannio region, a festival that has established itself over more than forty editions. Located in the charming town of Cusano Mutri, in the province of Benevento, this celebration showcases the Matese territory through its most authentic flavors and culinary traditions deeply rooted in time. This year's edition promises to be extraordinary, with an expanded program running from September to October, specifically designed to welcome the thousands of visitors who flock each year to the picturesque streets of this historic village. Following the challenging pandemic period, the festival has regained its original splendor, transforming local homes into welcoming taverns and setting up numerous food and wine stands serving as refreshment points and discovery experiences. Strolling among the stands, visitors can immerse themselves completely in the authentic atmosphere of the place, savoring mushroom dishes in all their varieties and combinations. The stars of the Matese are undoubtedly the renowned Porcino di Montella IGP, with its dark tones and deep flavor, the elegant wild Prataiolo mushroom with its delicate aroma, and the prized Ovolo buono, available only in autumn. Each variety is prepared according to traditional recipes passed down through generations: aromatic mushroom risottos, pappardelle with black Sannio truffle, rustic soups, and sautéed mushrooms prepared according to the Sannio recipe. Among the festival's signature dishes are: ‹Orecchiette with Porcini and Crispy Guanciale› (€12), ‹Mushrooms Stuffed with Ricotta and Pecorino› (€8), ‹Mixed Mushroom Broth with Crostini› (€10), and the dessert ‹Panettone with Porcini Mushrooms› (€6 each). Every recipe tells a story of tradition and dedication, where simple ingredients transform into memorable dishes that combine culinary pleasure with the discovery of the region's natural beauty. Entry to the stands is free; dishes are sold at fixed prices with tasting available at tables set throughout the historic center. Hours: Monday-Friday 18:00-23:00, Saturday and Sunday 12:00-23:00. Reservations are recommended at the main stands during peak traffic days.
