Balestro del Girifalco (The Girifalco Crossbow)

The Balestro del Girifalco is one of Tuscany's most captivating medieval historical reenactments, an event that transports visitors back in time to the 14th-15th century, when Massa Marittima was an independent Free Municipality. The festival spans three days in August 2026, combining crossbow shooting competitions, historical performances, and an extraordinary recreation of medieval city life. The heart of the celebration is the main nocturnal competition on August 14th, when twenty-four crossbowmen (eight from each Terziere district: Cittanuova, Cittavecchia, and Borgo) face off at Piazza Garibaldi in front of the Cathedral. The competition is preceded by a captivating procession featuring over 150 participants in authentic medieval costumes parading through the historic center, while the city's Flag-wavers and Musicians Company brings the atmosphere to life with spectacular performances. The full program begins on August 12th with the Balestruzzo, a competition for young crossbowmen, continues on August 13th with the banner presentation and historical procession, and culminates in the main nocturnal competition where the winner receives a golden arrow and their Terziere wins the silk-painted banner.
