Martedì 25 agosto, ore 21.30: 'Novità dagli scavi di Abbadia Isola' con Stefano Bertoldi

The monumental complex of Abbadia Isola in Monteriggioni hosts the conference 'News from the Excavations of Abbadia Isola', led by Stefano Bertoldi, a medieval archaeologist from the University of Siena. The talk is dedicated to unveiling the latest discoveries and insights gathered from archaeological excavations conducted between 2024 and 2025 in the heart of the complex, specifically in Piazza Gino Strada, the area behind the abbey, and Pian del Casone. This research has reconstructed the history of the monastic site and its fortified layout along the Via Francigena, revealing that during the Middle Ages, the complex was intimately linked to an aquatic landscape and a navigable wetland-lake. The evening will retrace the evolution of this unique environment, from a boat landing dock to the 14th-century land reclamations that gradually shaped today's rural countryside. This event marks the final lecture of the summer Tuesday series before the autumn resumption. In case of bad weather, the presentation will move indoors to Sala Ildebrando.
